TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY
AUGUST 22, 2010

PASTOR’S CORNER

It seems that in our world today everyone thinks that they are too busy. We are controlled by our calendars and lists. Even retirees pull out their calendars when they are invited to lunch or dinner. Young people run from one event to another after school and the biggest complaint among teenagers is that they have no time for themselves. These schedules and calendars do help us to keep our lives focused, but they also can be stumbling blocks on our path to real happiness and meaning in our lives. If we listed the values we have in order of priority, and then listed the things we spent time on, most of us would find that we spend very little time on the things we cherish the most.

The Lord invites each and every one of us each day to spend time with Him in prayer. He calls us daily to reach out to Him in our neighbors whether they live next door or are homeless in our community. We respond by looking at our schedules and reply that we are too busy. Sometimes we openly reject Him by ignoring the needs of our brothers and sisters. Yet, each minute of each day, the Lord is inviting us. Will we put the Lord on our calendars and schedules? Will we let Him turn our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh? Will we come to the banquet unprepared?

Your brother in Christ,
Father Dominic

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be on Friday from 8:30 AM Mass until 7:00 PM.

GUIDELINES FOR SPEAKING AT FUNERALS

The following are recent guidelines from the Archdiocese regarding "Words of Remembrance" at parish funerals.

The Order of Christian Funerals allows for a family member or friend of the deceased to speak after Communion, before the Final Commendation. Only one family member or friend is permitted to speak for no more than three minutes. These words of remembrance are meant to show an appreciation for the life of the deceased. They may take the form of a prayer or an inspirational text.

Those who wish to give a eulogy or to share a story could consider doing so at the Viewing/Wake or at the cemetery.

If you have any questions about this policy, please speak with Father Kearns.

HOSPITAL STAYS

A recently enacted law has affected the longstanding practice of hospitals and nursing facilities to provide information to churches about parishioners who are patients/residents. Because of this new law, the priests and the staff in the Parish office may not promptly learn, or may not learn at all, that a member of the Parish has been admitted to a hospital. If you, or a member of your family, are hospitalized, and you want the Parish office to know, please personally contact the office and identify the patient, the hospital and the room number. Because all area hospitals may not have the same policies allowing the priest of the parish to know when members are patients, direct notice to the Parish from you or your family is a better approach. If you will be undergoing elective surgery, please call the rectory in advance to receive the Sacrament of the Sick (Anointing). Emergency calls will be handled at all times.

This program earns money for the Parish or Tuition credit at no cost to you! The parish earns 5% on each of your purchases. Buying these gift cards is an easy habit to start and a great way to help generate needed funds for the parish. Beginning this weekend we will have them available in the vestibules at mass. We sell gift cards for Acme, Giant, Pathmark and Fresh Grocer. They come in denominations of $25, $50 or $100. If you would like to call the rectory during the week to place your order, we will see to it that it is ready for you to pick up at mass that weekend. Call Mary Lou for more information at 610-623-5160. If anyone would like to help sell these gift cards at mass, please let us know. Help is always needed and appreciated.
