WE HAVE BEEN HERE FOR BETTER THAN 50 YEARS. WE ARE TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE HEART OF MELBOURNE. THIS YEAR WE TO HAVE FACED THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING OUR SCHOOL CLOSED FOR FINANCIAL REASONS. WE LOVE OUR SCHOOL AND CHURCH FAMILY AND THE THOUGHT OF LOOSING IT DID NOT SIT WELL WITH US. WE HAVE MADE GREAT STRIDES THIS YEAR UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A NEW PRINCIPAL WHO HAS BEEN WORKING VERY DILLIGENTLY TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR SCHOOL WILL REMAIN OPEN. WE HAVE BEEN ASSURED THAT WE WILL BE HERE NEXT YEAR. WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF US AND WILL NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. OUR HEARTS ARE HERE WITH OUR CHILDREN. NOTHING BEATS A LOVING CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION. WE ARE INSPIRED BY YOU AND PROUD OF YOU. WE ARE A SMALL SCHOOL (200 STUDENTS) AND ARE LOOKING FOR ANY WAY THAT WE CAN TO RAISE NEEDED FUNDS TO ENSURE THAT WE WILL BE OPEN FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. GOD BLESS YOU!

From our Pastor Fr. Edward T. Kearns - May 10, 2007
To
all of you who made Tommy's wish a reality:
Jim Gray last night at the Home and School announced that you have raised over
$415,000 since last January. That is incredible! On behalf of the parishioners,
I thank you for all you have done and are doing to keep the dream alive.
As Jim said, "We raised enough for this school year, for next school year
and we're into our third year." This time last year it was hard to
believe that this could happen. It happened because of you and so many others
who decided to strive for the impossible. This goal has been reached because you
and countless women, men, girls, and boys were determined to believe.
May God continue to bless you and those whom you love.
Gratefully,
Father Edward T. Kearns

I went to St. Cyril for CCD a long time ago. Father Kearns has always been a great man. My father in law and deceased mother in law were wed in the church. St. Cyril has been a part of the community for a long time and I pray that it can continue to be.

I will always have a place in my heart with these memories. Good Luck with your campaign. Louis Schiavo, Sr.

Our School Board decided two and a half days before the end of the 2005-06 school year to close down our building and move our students to the basement of one of our supporting parishes. Some think this is the beginning of the end. But most of us still want to fight. I was trying to do some research on how to save our school, when I came across your website. It was inspiring and well done. Good luck to you!

My family moved into this parish in 1978. Over the years, we have made so many memories, being connected to the school and parish. I graduated in 1989, along with my brothers Joe (91) and Mike (98). We all received such a great education, and the teachers and staff have been wonderful. We've personally seen how the parish can come together with love and support, first, when our Dad, Tom, passed away in 1994 and again in September with the passing of our Mom, Peg. Mom started her work at St. Cyril's in 1981 when I was in first grade. Over time, I think she was a part of just about everything, and truly enjoyed every minute of it. Her favorite was just being with all the kids, especially the younger grades, as she was finally taller than someone! She knew how special the St. Cyril family is, and was proud to be a part of it. I know she is rallying in heaven, just as she would have here, to keep our school open. We have one of our biggest mascots (although smallest...) up there. We can't lose! I'm so happy to see the progress everyone has made, and pray that it continues. There is something to be said for strength in numbers. We have a strong support system and family. We do believe, and we WILL do it!

(This is an open letter of gratitude to the Delaware County Community from the Save Saint Cyril School Committee.)
April 11, 2006
Dear Neighbors and Friends,
The members of the Save Our
School Committee of Saint Cyril Parish in East Lansdowne, Delaware County, would
like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has helped us realize our
goal to keep our school open for the 2006-2007 school year.
What started out as a simple wish from a little boy afflicted with cystic
fibrosis to keep his school open for two more years so he could graduate with
his classmates turned into a labor of love from so many wonderful people who
embraced our cause.
Parishioners, former parishioners, alumni, neighbors, friends, family and even
complete strangers in the Delaware County community and beyond rose to the
occasion to help us reach our goal of raising $200,000 in less than two months.
It is a testament to our community that not only did we attain our goal, but in
63 days we exceeded it by $60,100!
As the song says, "We’ve Only Just Begun," and our efforts are now
directed to the 2007-2008 school year and beyond! We hope the community will
continue to support our mission. Miracles can happen and wishes do come true. We
at Saint Cyril’s are living proof of that.
Thank you, everyone, for your belief in Saint Cyril School.
Sincerely,
Save Saint Cyril School Committee

I attended St. Cyril's from kindergarten through 8th grade, graduating in 1953. It's fun to find out what happened to people we knew when we were young. I got nostalgic after retiring last year and have contacted several old high school classmates but haven't been able to find anyone from St. Cyril's. My post graduation life in a nutshell: Moved to Moorestown in South Jersey right after graduation; graduated from Villanova; joined the U.S. antarctic expedition and went to the south pole; became a writer for corporations and government agencies, writing speeches for the chairman of IBM and others; wrote two books on my own, resulting in numerous TV & radio appearances; got married and had a son & daughter; and am now writing a novel. My URL has information about my published books. A long interview with me, including photos, is at www.pbs.org . Type "Eugene Rodgers" into the search box at upper right and click on one of the links to my interview that come up. I'd love to hear from anyone I knew from school or St. Cyril's Boy Scout troop, East Landsowne #3.

I am so proud to have been part of this school and parish. I graduated in 1979 and continued to be a registered member even once I moved to Lansdowne in 1993. I was married at St. Cyril's and my 2 children were baptized there. We moved to West Chester in 2003 but it took a long time to adjust to feeling 'part of the parish'. When I heard of St. Cyril's plight, I gave my sisters the address to contribute and soon after, sent one from my family. We have been blessed to be part of a new parish where we have a new church and where it seems there is much financial support to continue its growth. Knowing how much St Cyril's has meant to me and my family for many years <my daughter - who's only 5 - still asks to go back to the old church sometimes>, I wanted to help others have that seem feeling by helping contribute to Tommy's wish and many others - that the school stay open and thrive! Let's keep it going. Again, congratulations!!!!

I moved from 536 Glendale Road in Upper Darby to South Philadelphia in 1962 but I did attend St.Cyril's in the first grade (1961-62 school year). After 41 years in South Philly, I moved to Roxborough after my parish school and church, St.Aloysius at 26th & Tasker, closed down. I hated the idea of moving away from such a close knit neighborhood and I do miss the old school and church. Thus, I know exactly what you are all feeling now. There was not much any of us could do to keep our school open since so many parishioners moved away. My donation of $300 gives me a chance to do something I only wish I could have done for St.Aloysius. PS I occasionally pass St.Cyril's and the school still looks nice. You have my e-mail address so keep me in the loop on future fundraising events. Ed Jackson

Ahh St Cyril’s this school holds many fond memories that I will cherish forever. I’m Rich Mitchell Class of 1980 when attending this fine institution I never thought I’d catch myself saying “I miss this place”. In retrospect I loved the place. I wish I could build a time machine and go back. I could not wait to walk up Radbourne across “the Lane” then up Lewis Avenue in my crisp white shirt and Navy blue tie just like my 2 older brothers Tony and Mike did before me. I also remember the May procession marches, Friday night dances in the social hall, St. Patrick’s Bingo Night, Christmas candy from Father O’Donnell and the 9 O’clock Children’s Mass. I was never one to visit the sin bin Millies. I remember being afraid of getting a Bernie-Poultan Ouch!!! I hope this great institution that was very formidable in helping me be who I am today survives. I have sent in my donation. Good Luck St Cyril’s.---Rich Mitchell

So many people are working extremely hard for St. Cyril School because they believe in the value of Catholic education. This reality, for me, was given a face last week when I heard of the unexpected death of my 1960 Classmate, Rev. Monsignor James E. Molloy. Monsignor had apparently died in his sleep as he rested before preparing to celebrate Mass at St. Agnes Church in Sellersville where he was the pastor. My friend and classmate, George, and I attended the visitation and parish Memorial Mass. Seeing Monsignor’s brother and sisters and other St. Cyril alumni again after so many years was like seeing family. We shared stories of Gene (as his family called him) and our growing up days at St. Cyril. It was wonderful to see how beloved he was as the pastor of a parish that reminded me so much of ours. The priest who worked with him spoke about Monsignor’s devotion to visiting the sick and comforting families who had lost a loved one – he had just come from a local hospital before he died. Monsignor manifested the compassion and love of Jesus to his parishioners and everyone who knew him in many ways. As a first grade student, I had hit my head in the schoolyard and was bleeding (imagine what our teacher, Sister Dorothy Regina, had to deal with – there were about 100 of us!) Gene took off his Miraculous Medal and gave it to me to wear, hoping to make me feel better. I never forgot his kindness. Someone told me that he had known in the 3rd Grade that he wanted to be a priest. Monsignor Molloy is an extraordinary example of Catholic education at St. Cyril’s yet he is not alone. As I recall the faces of all the students I have known through the years (too many to count), and all the awesome teachers who have devoted their lives to teaching our children, I am very clear why our school must continue. I want all children to have the opportunity to experience what Monsignor Molloy and so many of us did – a terrific Catholic education at a great school.

Hi From Donna Reiman, nee Morris. I went to St. Cyril's from 1967-1973 and am very sad that it may be closing. It was a big part of my life for so many years. I tried to get to the Beef N Beer but it sold out. I would be interested in helping out in any way I could.

When we heard that St. Cyril was in danger of closing I just sat and cried. My emotions took over me. When we decided to send our daughter to St. Cyril we had been to many other schools, but no other school gave us the feeling that St. Cyril did when we walked in the school to visit. It was during school hours and we were welcomed. We have faith that St. Cyril will remain for many years for everyone to graduate and return to visit. St. Cyrils is so much more than just a school to send your child to. St. Cyrils is a place your proud of, you feel safe leaving you little ones and you know there loved and protected until you get to see them at the end of the school day.

Keep fighting for your school! Sean is an alumnus of St. Cyril School and would love to see it stay open. On a personal note we have been through two closures ourselves with our children. We live in Paulsboro NJ (my hometown), one of the reasons for remaining here (and moving Sean) was so my children could attend my parish school of St. Johns. Our first child attended for three years before the devastating news that we were cited for closure.(1997-1998)We worked tirelessly like yourselves raising money, and recruiting new students. However I believe that the diocese's had an agenda all along, and were a little surprised when we rose to the occasion. They ended up closing us anyway, but I always felt like we went down fighting. Our children also learned that when you love something it's worth fighting for. So keep up your fight. We had some other issues (with Bingo funds) that were close to getting exposed, therefore I believe it was easier to close us and make things "go away". However the following years were tough. They didn't have a plan to merge us, they just cast us away and left it up to us to "find a school". The closest was 8 miles away. Many of us visited schools and in the end choose a school that was the best fit for our family. Our little school family was now dispersed through the county. Some of our area schools had special open houses for us. Of course they had low enrollment too. We got no support from the diocese at all. As it ended up we started a new school in September. I never felt worse in my life. I was driving 9 miles out of town to a school I didn't want to be at! My son was in third grade at the time and we did everything in our power to make it positive for him. We said all the things you should say about "things happening for a reason” but boy were we bitter!!! As it turned out by the end of that school year we decided to change schools. As did 7 of the other 9 families that went there. Once again we were orphans searching for a school. We found one, about 8 miles in the other direction. It was small, and the building was old. But it reminded us so much of our beloved St. Johns. Enrollment was just about 225. (200 was the magic number for closing) So we though we could help them and feel a little more comfortable. We were welcomed with open arms. I also had my other son starting Kindergarten that year so things were looking up. It was a great year and we felt like we found a home. However in February we got word that the Diocese's was going to close three grade schools and a high school and we were one of them. I couldn't believe I had to live this nightmare over again. Only this time they gave us no option to stay open, it was closing in June (along with the others no matter what!) I never dreamed my son would be in his fourth school in five years. It would have been so much easier to put them in public school, But I do believe in Catholic Schools, I just think they should be over seen by people who have a clue!! But that's another letter! However we found ourselves school shopping again. This time for two children a first grader and a fifth grader. Again no help, and not many options. I ended up being told at many schools that they had room for my 5th grader but not the 1st grader. It wasn't until July that summer that I finally got them both in the same school . Ironically my story ran on the front page of our local newspaper and within days I got some help from the dioceses. (They hate bad publicity). As it turned out we ended up at a very big and thriving school that we were always jealous of when we were small and poor. As much as I hate to admit it, it has worked out well. (It has taken years to admit that) My oldest son graduated from there 2003 (he attended for four years) and my youngest son is in 6th grade now. My oldest son is now a sophomore at Gloucester Catholic. He received a scholarship his first year after submitting an essay about being the "victim" of closures and continuing on in Catholic education. He often admits that he went into High School knowing so many more people because of the different schools he attended in grade school. He said he was use to being the "new kid" so there was no anxiety. He also remembers me telling him that something good would come from those hard times, and God had a bigger plan. And yes perhaps things do happen for a reason. I still wish my parish school didn't close, and I become very upset when I here of any school closing. (I don't know where they think the future priest and nuns will come from? ) I have also been lucky enough to witness a school that closed in 1989 re-open four years ago. So keep up your fight, every situation and every diocese is different. You have awesome alumni and a great spirit. I didn't share my story with you to make you feel bad. But to let you know that your fight is always worth it. I will be emailing and contacting some friends who have shared some of the same experiences I have. They too are passionate about keeping Catholic schools open. My hope is that they will send a donation to you. We were unable to attend the beef and beer but our donation is in the mail. We will be keeping up on your progress and look forward to helping anyway we can. "Pray like you don't have a chance, and work like you don't have a prayer"!!! God Bless all of you. Sincerely, Sean and Jean Lee Paulsboro, New Jersey

last entered this site on Aug 20, 2003 - one month to the day before my husband of 55 years plus 2 weeks had a massive coronary and passed away while on vacation in VT. We were married in the "old" rectory on Sept.4. 1948 by Fr. Albert Mangan. I still think of him as being surrounded by kids on the playground. My husband and I had attended the all class reunion in March and had tickets to attend the dinner in October. I took my sister in his place. My sister Mary McMenamin lives in Milmont Park; since she is five years younger, we are much closer now than when there was that difference. I have been adopted by her class of 195l from Notre Dame and attend all their reunions. Still keep in touch with Peg (Costigan) Gorman and recently had some funny correspondence from Fr. George Costigan who has been on temporary assignment in Huntsville, AL helping with Katrina work. He is a priest in the Patterson, NJ diocese. I have sent in a donation and am trying to interest others to do the same. My sister and two brothers, Joe and Bill (both deceased) and myself all attended the school and I still wonder how my parents afforded all the new shoes, white dresses, communion veils, flowers for all the processions, etc. I still remember fondly, as we were just coming out of the "Great Depression". We had Church Debt collectors to keep the parish going. This was Father O'Shea's era; just wanted the newer generation to know it is nothing new to need funds.

Well I have to say that I love St. Cyril School. My daughter graduated in 2004 and my son is in 6th grade. They came over from public school in 2002 and it was the best move for my children. My son goes to the best teacher in the world Sr. Ann Mark thanks to her program my son is doing great and his self confidence is off the charts. My husband, mother, uncle ,aunt and cousins graduated from St. Cyril. We were all married and most of our children were Baptized here I do believe that this school will stay open thanks to all the hard work everybody is doing. I have to say I am thankful to Tommy he brought so may people together and the sense of community is greater they ever. Tommy has showed us what catholic education is all about.

St.Cyrils is my home away from home. I made my sacraments at the wonderful church, baptized by Father Kearns, attend mass vigils there, and attended CCD at the school many years ago. I pray to the Lord every day that the place I call home away from home will stay alive and continue to dedicate it's catholic religion to people all around. I am 25 years old and a mother of a beautiful 4 year old. I want my son to attend CCD and make all of his sacraments in the home of our Lord-St.Cyrils! Our Lord will make it happen. We need to continue to pray and our Lord will answer our prayers. Amen

St Cyril's has a lot to offer our children. I graduated from Cyril's (1969) as did my three sisters (1965, 1967 and 1970). My daughter graduated in 1996 and my son is currently in 7th grade. My Mom was a devoted "Church Lady" and many years of my life have been spent in and around St Cyril Church. Our CYO program is great - see CYO link - and offers the students a great athletic experience. I am glad to see so many people coming together to make this happen. Although I was skeptical at first, I am amazed at the success of this drive. Please purchase car raffle tickets as this will bring in much needed funds. Regardless of why we are in this position, the response has been a very positive demonstration of what St. Cyril is all about.

I just read about the possible closing of St. Cyril's School. My parents, James and Marie McFadden, were in the parish from the beginning and friendly with Father Edmond O'Shea. My twin brothers, Eugene and Jack, were baptized and buried from St. Cyril's (1928--1930). My sisters and I were blessed to attend St. Cyril's: Rosemary, class of 1946; Jean, class of 1953 and myself, class of 1948. Unfortunately I have seen a number of schools where I taught as a Sister of Notre Dame close for a variety of reasons. It is never easy. I have fond memories of many of the Sisters: Sisters Alice Patricia, St. Winiferd, Janet, LaVerne, Marita Norman, Miriam Gertrude and Rosalina as well as Mother Francilla. The dedicated priests I knew at St. Cyril's are still an inspiration to me: Fathers O'Shea, Mangan, Msgr. Woods, Doyle, Kinnery and many others including Msgr. O'Donnell, Dean, etc. Thank you for making St. Cyril's an important part of my life; I shall certainly pray for a miracle -- in whatever way it is given to the devoted people and graduates of St. Cyril Parish. God bless you. Sister Elizabeth Ann McFadden, SND

Most of you are the same people that are always involved in all the St. Cyril functions, and have been for years. It is because of your support that the school has made it this far.It is because of that core group working so hard that are school and church keeps fighting. What a wonderful job the volunteers have done. Also as I have already told Connie, Tommy is wonderful thoughtful young man, which he was before his wish but now everyone can see it. Congrats to him for making this his personal mission. Tommy is a well spoken caring young man. His parents have done wonderful job raising him and teaching him how to be a good young man with catholic values.I hope all his wishes come true. I graduated from St. Cyril's in 2000. I never understood it then, but I realize now the difference that a Catholic education from St. Cyril's has made in my life. I still utilize the concepts that I learned in grade school despite being a college sophomore at Boston University. Just the other night while taking my Managerial Accounting Exam (and being completely stumped on about 4 problems) I remembered something that those old Math Maintenance sheets taught me; Rate = Part/Base. Using this I was able to complete my exam. This is just an example of the many wonderful things that I learned and never forgot in grade school. God Bless the Salvation Efforts! Keep up the Good Work!

This is for all the families considering enrolling their child/ren in St. Cyril's School. St. Cyril's is a wonderful place for children and adults. You are guaranteed a solid foundation from which your child can go forth successfully. We currently have a son in sixth grade who is doing very well because his needs are being met. He gets help from Sister Ann's program for children with learning differences, and he gets help from Miss Williams, a very nice woman and an excellent math teacher from the IU. You should know that programs like Sister Ann's are not available at all parochial schools. We also have three other children who have already graduated from Saint Cyril's. Our daughter went on to Archbishop Prendergast and graduated from there with honors. She is currently a sophomore at Boston University. Our twin sons are Juniors at Monsignor Bonner High School and are receiving honors. They are not only doing well academically, they are growing up to be good and decent people because, from the beginning, the values that we teach at home have always been reinforced in school. This is our story and there are hundreds more just like it.

I am a member of St Andrews Parish of Newtown, Pa. I came across the problems of your school while reading the Philadelphia Inquirer. Father Kerns was once stationed here, and did a fine job. Perhaps Farther Kerns could contact Father Picard of St Andrews and have St Andrews take up a special collection. St Andrews has a rather wealthy congregation. I have sent three children through St. Andrews, and know how important a catholic education is, and how important it was to be a student at the same school until graduation. I will be sending in a donation of my own. Best wishes, and good luck keeping the school open.

I can't believe that this website has been around for so long and I am now just seeing it! I have so many memories of my time at St. Cyril's. I did not see many names from my class, which would be the class of 1982. Where are you? If I do not make it to the fundraiser, I plan on sending a donation. Along with my donation will be a novena to St. Teresa! I hope that Tommy's wish gets granted!!!!!

Just found this page and it was great to see the names of a few of my friends from the Class of '62. The bad news is obviously that the school is in trouble. I'll be sending a donation to help avoid this tragedy and hope that my fellow classmates will join me.

I learned of Tommy Geromichalos' wish through family who are still living in Delaware County, and I want him to know that St. Cyril's alumni - even those of us who are no longer in the area - support him 100% My prayers and best wishes go out to everyone at St. Cyril's, that Tommy's wish will come true.

I am a parishioner and my kids go to PREP class. I am very upset about the fact that this is happening to our school and even though my kids go to schools in the UD school District a Catholic education is over all the best you can get. I have volunteered to help with the fundraisers and I am willing to help any way I can. I have always wanted my kids to go to a Catholic School but it just did not happen. I to BELIEVE that with the efforts of everyone in the parish we can keep this wonderful school running so Tommy and all the other kids can graduate a great school.

Not sure what we can do to help----but the people at our company--Career Concepts---are the greatest! For the last 18 years--we have enjoyed "helping people" find jobs or helping companies find talented people. Every day around our offices---you hear--"I need your help" hundreds of times as we ask others to help us help others. I'm not bragging--but we have been fortunate to be connected to a lot of people throughout the region---perhaps we ask for help again and see what our collective efforts might achieve. Tomorrow--I will ask our team what we can do to help Tommy with his EMERGENCY WISH --collect ideas, suggestions, etc and help the community get behind keeping Saint Cyril open. I will get back to you with our commitment. Joe Dougherty EVP/Partner Career Concepts 610-941-4455(103)office jdougherty@cciconsulting.com www.cciconsulting.com

Class of "52 I was recently made aware of the situation that St. Cyril's is facing with the closing of the school. I think it is great that so many people are willing to help keep the school open and will be glad to participate in that effort. I know now what attending a Catholic grade school provided me and would like to see that opportunity continue to be made available for many years to come.
