SOS / DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE NEWS

Formerly the "Save St. Cyril School Committee" has a new name but the goal is the same – to keep our parish school open.

Thanks to everyone who have helped us succeed in our efforts to keep St. Cyril School open. June 2008 will see Tommy Geromichalos and his classmates graduate from St. Cyril School. Hopefully, we can keep St. Cyril School open and continue to be an important part of the East Lansdowne and Upper Darby communities. Please look for our committees plans for various fundraisers during the 2007-2008 school year on the St. Cyril website.

HELP WANTED

Our wonderful, dedicated group of volunteers who help keep our sanctuary clean is getting smaller and smaller. If anyone can spare an hour on Thursday mornings after the 8:00 AM mass to assist these ladies, it would be very much appreciated.

Photo from Delaware County Daily Times April 3, 2007

Phillies bullpen coach Ramon Henderson returns the ball to David Wolfson, who threw out the first pitch of the season opener.  David's father, local developer Steve Wolfson submitted the winning bid of $5,000 and threw in an additional $5,000 donation.  They also won 4 seats in the first row behind home plate with Tommy G, along with food and VIP parking.

The eBay auction is over.  The winning bid was $5,000 and an additional $5,000 donation was thrown in, with the proceeds going to St. Cyril Save Our School Fund.  Thank you to Mitchell Modell, Modell's Sporting Goods, Steve Wolfson, and the Phillies for their generous assistance.

To further support the effort, Modell's sold exclusive "Tommy G, I Believe" t-shirts with 100% of proceeds going towards keeping Saint Cyril of Alexandria school open.

GUIDELINES FOR SPEAKING AT FUNERALS

The following are recent guidelines from the Archdiocese regarding "Words of Remembrance" at parish funerals.

The Order of Christian Funerals allows for a family member or friend of the deceased to speak after Communion, before the Final Commendation. Only one family member or friend is permitted to speak for no more than three minutes. These words of remembrance are meant to show an appreciation for the life of the deceased. They may take the form of a prayer or an inspirational text.

Those who wish to give a eulogy or to share a story could consider doing so at the Viewing/Wake or at the cemetery.

If you have any questions about this policy, please speak with Father Kearns.

CBS National News featured Tommy's Wish on its Assignment America segment on Friday, April 28, 2006.  You can see the video on the CBS News website. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/28/assignment_america/main1560919.shtml

Save Our School

Many great stories of kindness and generosity have come to light during the effort to save St. Cyril School.  Starting with the wish of Tommy Geromichalos, these good deeds have continued and multiplied.  We want to capture and record as many of these stories as we can.  We hope to use some of these stories in future newsletters and on our web site.  If you have an inspirational story about the effort to save Saint Cyril School that you can share with us, and allow us to share with others, we would love to hear it.  Don't worry about spelling or grammar; we can proof read it before it gets printed.
Click here for more information and to submit your story.

"I BELIEVE" LICENSE PLATES"

The "I Believe" License Plates are still available for $10 each. Now, more than ever, you should be proud to display this plate on the front of your car! These can still be purchased at the rectory during business hours or you can call Steve Love at 610-724-7128.

ABITIBI PAPER RETRIEVER

We are now participating in a Paper Recycling program through Abitibi Recycling Company. You will see the green bin in our schoolyard between the school and the convent. Please bring all your newspapers, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, junk mail and folders to the bin. Please do not place any cardboard, phonebooks or plastic bags in the container. The parish will receive a monthly payment from Abitibi. This is a great way to help the environment and also make money for our parish.

Check out other events on our fund-raiser page.

SPONSOR  A  STUDENT
TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

St. Cyril has a program in place to help with the tuition needs of some of our parish families. Many of us were fortunate to receive a free (or almost free) Catholic education. Today that is not possible. For the 2004-05 school year, our school families pay tuition of $2,225 for one child; $2,900 for two children and $3,550 for 3 or more children. Should you wish to help a family with their tuition bills, see www.saintcyril.org/sponsor.htm click here for more information  or contact Fr. Kearns.  All inquiries are confidential and your support is most appreciated as we try to help those families who are struggling to keep their children in our parish school.
For more information click here.

R.C.I.A.

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a Catholic, please join us for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) on Thursday nights at 7:30 PM in the school. Our weekly meetings are open to all parishioners as well and to anyone who would like to learn more about the faith. We have a diverse and interesting group of teachers, cover all kinds of topics and are open to any and all questions. For more information, please call Mary Kate Murphy at 610-259-2949.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be on Friday from 8:30 AM and continue until 4:00 PM.

ALTAR ANGELS

Our "Altar Angels" are in need of extra help on Thursday afternoons cleaning the church. If you would be able to donate an hour or two of your time, please come to church any Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM. Thank you.

HOSPITAL STAYS

A recently enacted law has affected the longstanding practice of hospitals and nursing facilities to provide information to churches about parishioners who are patients/residents. Because of this new law, the priests and the staff in the Parish office may not promptly learn, or may not learn at all, that a member of the Parish has been admitted to a hospital. If you, or a member of your family, are hospitalized, and you want the Parish office to know, please personally contact the office and identify the patient, the hospital and the room number. Because all area hospitals may not have the same policies allowing the priest of the parish to know when members are patients, direct notice to the Parish from you or your family is a better approach. If you will be undergoing elective surgery, please call the rectory in advance to receive the Sacrament of the Sick (Anointing). Emergency calls will be handled at all times.

WALK OF MEMORIES

You may have noticed  our "Walk of Memories" (from Penn to Lewis) has been completed.  Orders are being taken for engraved bricks. Brochures and order blanks are available in the vestibules of the Church. For more information you can call the rectory during regular business hours. Please, don’t panic. At this time there are plenty of bricks to go around but take advantage of the opportunity.

Click here for Walk of Memories Information
