This picture of St Cyril football team of 1954 was sent in by Joe Lauro:
"We were undefeated until the last game of the season, the game ended in a tie, but they gave the win to St. Rose of Lima because they had more first downs then we did. I don't think there was a dry eye on the team. Our quarterback was Joe Brogan, and our fullback was Jimmy Hoffman, Frankie Gallager is also in this picture."

 Meet Big Sean Ferguson

Wait a minute – was that an NFL player on the 69th Street field? No, it’s Sean, Sean Ferguson. Anyone who has been to a St Cyril football game in the last two years knows exactly who Sean Ferguson is. He can’t be missed. He stands heads above the crowd – literally. This young man is only 14 years old and is going to be a freshman in High School. Yet he is 6 foot 3” and weighs in at 320 pounds. Impossible you say? We say no, it is not only possible, but it is a fact. It makes sense that his nickname is “Big Sean”.

Sean joined the St. Cyril CYO football league when he was 12 years old and a student at Our Lady of Victory School. At that time Sean and his dad went down to the field to see if he could sign up for the Pop Warner Wildcats. The coach of the 69th Street league could not play Sean due to weight restrictions. He called Jay Borrelli to tell him about Sean. To say Jay was excited is an understatement. However, it took Jay three weeks to find a helmet for Sean. He went to all the area high schools and finally found one to fit him – NFL helmet size XL

We are sure other teams were struck with fear when he walked onto the field. But once you get to know him you have to love him. That is because Sean is a well mannered, soft spoken young man - a gentle giant. Sean lives with his family in Philadelphia. He has an older brother Jordan and a younger brother Derrick. Derrick presently plays for St. Cyril on the Varsity team. Sean was selected in 2005 to represent St Cyril in the annual All Star Blue Gold game held at Upper Darby High School.

When asked what he remembers most about St. Cyril, Sean said “My memory of playing football here was running laps. Even though I didn’t like doing them, they are the one thing that sticks in my mind. Also, I will always remember Coach Jay’s determination to win“.  Sean attended Kevin Miller’s CORE camp at Monsignor Bonner High School this summer and worked very hard to improve his football skills. Coach Jay told us “Watching Sean do a 100% turnaround in his preparation and mind set made me very proud of him. Sean will be my first player to reach a Division 1 college. I wish him the best of luck”.

As he graduated from 8th grade, Sean was recruited by 5 different schools. He selected Malvern Prep and received a four year scholarship for Football. His older brother Jordan attends Malvern Prep as well on an academic scholarship. We all wish him the very best and we will miss him. However, we know that the sky is the limit for Sean and we continue to follow all his accomplishments. Good luck Sean - we love you!

Update 08/2007 - Sean has gotten taller - 6' 6" and he is still a wonderful young man. He is excited about his upcoming year in Malvern Prep. Sean attended many camps this season and continues to work hard to become the best player he can be. Younger brother Derrick, selected to represent St Cyril in the 2007 Blue Gold game, is now playing for Monsignor Bonner's 2007 freshman team as a lineman. Hey, this family is talented!

Meet Craig Love

To the Love family, St. Cyril is a family affair. You probably know his Mom, Mary Lou, who works in the Rectory. I’m sure you’ve spotted his dad, Steve, around the Church from time to time, doing “something” for someone. Sons Steve, Chris and Craig, all St Cyril alumni, played for the Wildcat Football team. Why the whole family lives right across the street from the Church. You can’t get any closer in school spirit than that.

Craig attended St Cyril School for 8 years and played Football for the Wildcats on the 3rd grade Flag up to the 8th grade Varsity team. Craig was versatile and did anything the team needed. He punted, ran the ball and was also the quarterback. When asked how he became QB, Craig simply responded, “Because Coach Jay told me to.”

When asked what his most memorable as well as forgetful experiences were while playing for the Wildcats, he responded “Being in the Parade of Champions in the 5th grade was great, but running 100 Yard suicides was tough.” Craig explained that playing for St Cyril prepared him for the High School gridiron. “My goal was to attend Monsignor Bonner and play in their football program”, he said.

“It was my pleasure to coach Craig Love”, Coach Jay Borrelli says, “He represents exactly what a CYO athlete should be. He has respect, loyalty and is the utmost TEAM player. I not only consider Craig as one of my favorites, but I consider him one of my best friends. It puts a smile on my face seeing him suit up as Bonner’s Quarterback along with running backs, Omar Bullock and Frankie Bizzari, both of whom played at Cyril’s. I am proud of all of them. I coached Craig in many different sports during his years at St. Cyril – all phases of Football, but also 3rd and 4th Grade Baseball and Basketball from 5th to 8th grade - six years in all."

Craig is Senior and presently plays the quarterback position on the Monsignor Bonner High School Varsity team. Craig’s goal is to attend college where he can continue getting his education and play sports. You can see Craig play for Bonner by simply tuning in. Catholic League High School games are now being televised.

08/2007 Update - Craig will be attending college at Nuemann College in Aston, PA where he will be playing baseball. We wish you the best and we hope you treasure your memories of St Cyril Football!

09/2007 Update - Craig is assisting Coach Borrelli with the 2007 Varsity and JV Quarterbacks. Below is a picture of him on the field. Thanks Craig for all you do for our kids!

Meet Mike Kimple

Another Upper Darby local, Mike grew up on Guilford Road in Upper Darby. He went to Notre Dame De Lourdes for first and second grade and then to Saint Cyril’s from third through fifth grade. Mike played basketball and baseball for Saint Cyril’s and started JV Football there in fifth grade as a right and left defensive tackle. That team went undefeated that year and won the championship.

After fifth grade he moved to Ridley Park , PA and attended Our Lady of Peace. Mike played football for Saint Kevin’s and Saint Francis in sixth and seventh grade and for Our Lady of Fatima in eighth grade. Mike went to Cardinal O’Hara where he played defensive line.

Remembering his Saint Cyril football experience Mike said “I consider it the place that got me started and hooked on football.  As far as Jay, he is a great coach and definitely has a passion for football. I would have liked to be able to play for him throughout my grade school playing days. If there is one thing Cyril football let me recognize was that if I could get through one of Coach Jay’s practices than I could get through pretty much anything.”

Mike selected Ursinus because it was close enough where his family could still see him play. They are his strongest supporters, and Ursinus offered the best academic fit.  He is studying for a Business and Economics Degree with a minor in coaching.  In the future Mike hopes to one day be working with a sports team in either management or marketing.

Below is a 2005 picture of Mike in the end-zone after scoring a touchdown vs. La Salle University .
