75 Years In East Lansdowne and Upper Darby

2003 was our 75th Anniversary!

Our 75th Anniversary Banquet and Concluding Mass was Sunday, October 12, 2003.
Many Priests and Sisters from the past came back to attend.
Click here for some pictures from the special occasion.

Founders' Day Mass : 3 PM June 1, 2003: One of the main events of the Anniversary Year
Click here for details and pictures from our Founders' Day celebration.
Our Mass that day honored Father O'Shea, the founder of St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish in 1928.  There was  a blessing of a plaque with the names of former pastors and a special homage to Father O'Shea.  We also honored the members of the parish who were here in the beginning and are here today.
Priests and sisters who were formerly stationed here also attended.

The U.S. Postal Service had a special temporary station in the Social Hall featuring a special pictorial cancellation designed by one of our school's 7th grade students.

75th  Anniversary Cookbook is now in with hundreds of recipes from parish members and alumni - see below    Books are still available!

Our Parish Picnic was Saturday August 16 from 12 Noon to 6PM at Smedley Park.
The forecast called for late afternoon showers but unfortunately the rain started shortly after the picnic set up at Noon and continued until shortly before 6:00.  Mike Keller and a group of die-hards refused to let that spoil their day.  Mike said they gave out over 100 hot dogs and made good use of their umbrellas.

School Tour & All-Class Reunion

On Saturday March 22, 2003 the 75th Anniversary Committee held an all class reunion in the Social Hall.  The event was sold out a month early and there were rumors of ticket sales on e-bay.  Immediately preceding the reunion the school was open for a tour for alumni and guests.  The teachers and students did a great job decorating their classrooms and some of the older students gave guided tours.
Over 500 alumni and guests showed up for the All-Class Reunion and a great time was had by all.  Graduates from the 30's thru the 90's; from near and far came back to Saint Cyril's to get together again.  Click here to check out the pictures to see if you recognize any of your classmates.

WILLIAMSBURG/BUSCH GARDENS

A special thank you to Jane Berry and Arlene Bobnak for their hard work in planning the trip to Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. A great time was had by all! Thanks Jane and Arlene!

Guided Tour of the Church

CHURCH TOUR

Our last church tour was such a success, members of the committee will have another tour of our beautiful church on Sunday, September 28th at 1:00 PM. The tour will begin at the front doors of church. All are welcome!

The Anniversary Committee researched information on the stained glass windows, paintings, statues, doors, symbols, etc, to use in a tour of the Church.  The tour was given on Sunday May 4, 2003 after the 12:00 o'clock mass.  We hope to eventually put the information on our web site with pictures.
Click here to see a preliminary draft of our virtual tour.

If you have any information that you think may be useful in our tour, please send it to bobk@saintcyril.org

ANNIVERSARY MEMORIES

The following is an excerpt from a celebration held by Father O’Shea in 1947:

"St. Cyril’s Parish was founded on June 13, 1928. St. Cyril’s Parish comprises East Lansdowne, Fernwood and Stonehurst Hills.

St. Cyril’s First Sunday Mass was celebrated in the Stonehurst Hills Public School Building in July, 1928.

The first Christmas Day Mass was held in 1928 in the Stonehurst Hills Moving Picture House, which opened on that day."

This Christmas was the 75th time that we have gathered as a parish to celebrate the Birth of Christ. We are blessed by God who keeps us united as His People.
